Lakers put it on cruise control

WASHINGTON – This was an improvement, more like the Lakers hope to play. This was a more satisfying result because they sustained their effort and execution almost from start to finish Tuesday night. Maybe their trip Monday to the White House recharged their batteries. The Lakers certainly played with a heightened sense of purpose while defeating the Washington Wizards, 115-103, at the Verizon Center.

Aussie Open semifinals will be short 1 Williams sister

MELBOURNE, Australia – Defending champion Serena Williams survived against Victoria Azarenka in a classic comeback win today (Tuesday night PST), preventing back-to-back upsets after her sister Venus lost to Li Na. Venus Williams had a chance to serve for the match in the second set against Li but she went down in a flurry of errors. Serena Williams lost the first set and was down two breaks of serve against Azarenka until she rallied to win five straight games to get herself back on track for a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 win.

Leuzinger stays in control of Bay League boys basketball race

Leuzinger boys basketball coach Reggie Morris said his team is finally starting to come together after an injury-filled nonleague season. Morris also said Leuzinger’s quest for the ideal game continues, but it came awfully close to it on Tuesday night during an 81-67 Bay League victory at Peninsula High.

Mira Costa girls basketball delivers message to Palos Verdes

It was supposed to be a Bay League girls basketball showdown. Instead, Mira Costa made it a mockery. Mira Costa scored the game’s first 10 points and simply pulverized Palos Verdes, 50-29, Tuesday night at Mira Costa in which even the lopsided score doesn’t demonstrate the Mustangs’ true dominance.
