Few arenas like Oregon’s Big Mac

Eighty-three years playing home basketball games in one leaky, creaky facility can get a little old. Mostly for the lanky, cranky opposing teams. The University of Oregon’s McArthur Court – aka Mac Court, more notoriously referred to as “The Pit” – is scheduled to disappear as the Ducks’ advantageous dungeon when the next season of Pacific-10 Conference play starts. It’ll be replaced by a sleek, $200 million all-purpose facility across campus bankrolled primarily by Nike chief Phil Knight. The overtime loss UCLA suffered on Mac Court’s maple floor Thursday night, and the game USC will play there tonight, mark the last time either Southern California team has to step foot in the rickety relic again.

Federer rolls into Aussie final

MELBOURNE, Australia — Roger Federer stormed into his 22nd Grand Slam final after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, in a near-flawless display today (late Thursday night PST) at the Australian Open Federer, seeking his fourth Australian title, hopes to reverse his tear-filled exit from last year’s final when he was beaten by Rafael Nadal, the left-handed Spaniard’s first hard-court title. This time, the man between Federer and another title here Sunday (late Saturday night PST) will be Andy Murray, whose motivation has been fueled by a 74-year drought for British men in Grand Slam singles.

Bruins can’t get last word at Mac Court

EUGENE, Ore. – Just as UCLA’s starters legs started to go, Oregon’s reserves had theirs in reserve. A pair of backup Ducks – sophomore guard Matthew Humphrey and freshman forward E.J. Singler – proved the difference on Thursday night as Oregon defeated the Bruins, 71-66, in overtime in UCLA’s last visit to McArthur Court. Humphrey had a pair of crucial 3-pointers and eight total points in the extra period and Singler added all eight of his points in overtime as the Bruins slumped at the end.

UCLA becoming more comfortable in the zone

The Bruins held Washington to eight-for-27 shooting in the second half of a 62-61 victory Thursday night, and their defense will be tested again today against Washington State.

UCLA seems to be getting the hang of this zone defense thing, noticeably absent during Coach Ben Howland’s first four seasons in Westwood.
