A shored-up defense to go along with the always dangerous Elliot Morris has turned the North Torrance boys basketball team into one of the hottest teams in the Pioneer League. The Saxons solidified that status Friday with a 79-70 victory over visiting El Segundo, not only avenging an earlier loss to the Eagles, but also giving North sole possession of second place in league. The win is the Saxons’ fourth in a row after opening league play 0-2.

When Narbonne lost its first Marine League game on Wednesday – to Gardena by three goals no less – it gave the rest of the Marine League contenders hope that a league title was not out of reach. League title contenders have a little less reason for optimism after Narbonne bounced back with a 2-1 win over rival Banning on Friday at Narbonne High.

El Camino is ranked 14th in Southern California and Harbor is ranked 20th. But both teams believe they can do better than that and be among the elite if certain pieces fall into place.

Leuzinger boys basketball coach Reggie Morris said his team is finally starting to come together after an injury-filled nonleague season. Morris also said Leuzinger’s quest for the ideal game continues, but it came awfully close to it on Tuesday night during an 81-67 Bay League victory at Peninsula High.

What looked predictable became inevitable Saturday night, when the United States sent a group of backups out to take on a World Cup participant. It was one thing for the U.S. to send out its youth brigade against Honduras in an exhibition at Home Depot Center. It was quite another to expect much more than a 3-1 defeat in front of a mostly Honduran crowd of 18,626 after defender and team captain Jimmy Conrad was sent off with a second yellow card only 17 minutes into the match.
