A shored-up defense to go along with the always dangerous Elliot Morris has turned the North Torrance boys basketball team into one of the hottest teams in the Pioneer League. The Saxons solidified that status Friday with a 79-70 victory over visiting El Segundo, not only avenging an earlier loss to the Eagles, but also giving North sole possession of second place in league. The win is the Saxons’ fourth in a row after opening league play 0-2.

When Narbonne lost its first Marine League game on Wednesday – to Gardena by three goals no less – it gave the rest of the Marine League contenders hope that a league title was not out of reach. League title contenders have a little less reason for optimism after Narbonne bounced back with a 2-1 win over rival Banning on Friday at Narbonne High.

It was one thing for the U.S. to send out its youth brigade against Honduras in an exhibition at Home Depot Center. It was quite another to expect much more than a 3-1 defeat in front of a mostly Honduran crowd of 18,626 after defender and team captain Jimmy Conrad was sent off with a second yellow card only 17 minutes into the match.
