Roger Federer sweeps into Australian Open final

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wins only seven games Friday in the men’s semifinal. The world’s top-ranked player will meet Andy Murray in the championship match.

Roger Federer is through to his 22nd Grand Slam final after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, in a near-flawless display Friday at the Australian Open.

L.A. Sol folds after one season

Aussie Open semifinals will be short 1 Williams sister

MELBOURNE, Australia – Defending champion Serena Williams survived against Victoria Azarenka in a classic comeback win today (Tuesday night PST), preventing back-to-back upsets after her sister Venus lost to Li Na. Venus Williams had a chance to serve for the match in the second set against Li but she went down in a flurry of errors. Serena Williams lost the first set and was down two breaks of serve against Azarenka until she rallied to win five straight games to get herself back on track for a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 win.

Del Potro, Safina out; Nadal, Murray slay giants to set up quarterfinal

MELBOURNE, Australia – Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray held off two of the tallest men and biggest servers in tennis today (Saturday night PST) to set up a quarterfinal meeting at the Australian Open. Defending champion Nadal had a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over 6-foot-10 Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, the tallest man on the tour. In the previous match on Rod Laver Arena, No. 5 Murray overcame 6-foot-9 American John Isner, 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-2.

U.S. has little in reserve

What looked predictable became inevitable Saturday night, when the United States sent a group of backups out to take on a World Cup participant. It was one thing for the U.S. to send out its youth brigade against Honduras in an exhibition at Home Depot Center. It was quite another to expect much more than a 3-1 defeat in front of a mostly Honduran crowd of 18,626 after defender and team captain Jimmy Conrad was sent off with a second yellow card only 17 minutes into the match.

Solberg wins it for Chadwick

Freshman Jenna Solberg had three goals, including the game-winner in sudden-death overtime, as the Chadwick girls water polo team defeated El Segundo, 10-9, in four overtimes in a nonleague match at the El Segundo Plunge on Thursday afternoon.
